How a link is made. A topic is a curated note in the library that at least 4 papers use; general machine-learning and statistics tools are left out. Two topics are joined when at least 3 papers use both and they appear together at least 2 times as often as chance would give, a difference a significance test confirms. Areas are found from these links alone and named after their own most-used problems. The links between papers and topics come from our reading pipeline and include passing mentions, so a single link can be wrong; the test only removes chance pairings.
