Crowd counting in Wi-Fi/CSI sensing refers to the task of estimating the number of people present in a given area by analyzing channel state information (CSI) or received signal features, without requiring individuals to carry any devices or interact with the system. It matters to the field because it enables passive, infrastructure-based occupancy monitoring for applications such as building management, emergency response, and public safety, while also serving as a benchmark problem for evaluating the generalizability of sensing systems across different environments. Key variants include fine-grained counting of small numbers of individuals in controlled indoor spaces and coarser occupancy estimation in larger or more complex environments, with a central challenge being the strong environment dependence of CSI signatures, which can degrade model performance when systems are deployed in settings different from where they were trained.
