The Atheros CSI Tool is an open-source firmware and driver modification for Qualcomm Atheros 802.11n wireless network interface cards (NICs), most commonly the AR9380 chipset, that enables extraction of raw Channel State Information (CSI) at the subcarrier level from received Wi-Fi signals. It is significant to the Wi-Fi sensing field because it provides researchers with fine-grained, per-subcarrier amplitude and phase measurements across multiple antenna pairs without requiring specialized hardware, making it one of the most widely adopted platforms for collecting CSI datasets used in tasks such as indoor localization, occupancy detection, and crowd counting. The tool is closely associated with commodity hardware setups using desktop or laptop machines running Linux, and it is often used alongside or compared to the Intel 5300 CSI Tool, which targets a different chipset, with the two representing the dominant hardware-software variants for CSI-based sensing research.
